underdogs my ass It’s that time of the year. That meaning the time of the year when my head is wrapped up in the game, and I just can’t not write about it. CNNSI is calling this a Red Sox series, a victory in five games, and they’re giving the Sox the edge over the Rockies in eleven of the fifteen categories they’ve broken the teams into. Well, fuck CNNSI, I say. They left “heart” off of the page, which is just about the only category that matters. Ain’t that sweet of me. So California’s on fire. Lot of people being evacuated, including the families of a few people I work with. Today E. pointed out her parents’ house on a map. It was about an eighth of an inch south of a giant creeping red wall. The sky here has cleared, but Monday it was orange and dumpy from the smoke, which kickstarted my allergies. Tuesday I was dripping and sneezing like a crazy man. When every sneeze prompted five instant messages from coworkers saying things like STOP IT or GODDAMN YOU SCARED MY DOG, and when I noticed that A. was trying to record my sneezes (for what nefarious purpose I have no idea), I figured it was time to go, so I spent the rest of the day working from home and watching Battlestar Galactica. Lot of people in these parts think the Rockies are a washout, that their eight days of rest is going to somehow undermine their 21-1 winning streak, that they’re going to succumb to starstruckedness in Fenway, that Josh Beckett’s going to single-handedly pitch them into oblivion, etc. Me, I don’t buy any of that shit. Baseball stories like this one only come along once every few billions of years. They don’t spend all that time gestating just to fizzle when their time comes. Anyway, my prediction’s this: Rockies over Red Sox in five. Bring it on. 5 Responses to “underdogs my ass” Comment on this entry |
