John McKone, a supremely talented fingerpicking guitarist and musician, is the guy who got this big ol' ball rolling for me. In early 2002 I discovered John's music, which he had been distributing for free on the Gnutella network, and happened across his web site one day. I had been working primarily as an in-house designer/developer for a handful of web firms for a few years, and John became my first freelance client.
I wrote to John and raised the possibility of redesigning his web site, which needed a little work. He thanked me for the offer but politely declined, so I did the polite thing myself: I didn't let it go. I spent some time developing a concept for a "new" JohnMcKone.com, and when it was polished to gleaming, I shared it with him.
I got the job, on one condition: that I also design the packaging for his new CD. I'd never done that before, had next to no experience with print design, so I said the only smart thing I could think of: Sure, no problem.
